Description: | FINE ANTIQUE PLAIN NUREMBERG BARLEYCORN CHESS SET & ORIGINAL BOX C.1850-1880
An intruiging plain wooden Barleycorn chess set from one of the centres of German chess manufacturing in the 19th century, the workshops of the master craftsmen of Nuremberg. In relevant Nuremberg pattern sheets this specific type of set can be seen.
White side in maple, the other left natural probably in cocobolo.
Kings with attractive multi turned bodies and small pointed finials, queens similar but of smaller size with ovoid knops, the bishops with slender columns
and flat tops, knights as arched horses heads with their mane laid to one side and eyes, the rooks as elegant full gun turrets, pawns with baluster knops.
The king c. 6.7 cm high, the pawn c. 2.8 cm high.
The set in excellent and nearly unused original condition, still retains original French polished finish (please see image).
All pieces original to set, no major chips, no cracks, no replacements.
The white queen, one white bishop with tiny chip to a turning ring and one black pawn with tiny chip to collar, not visible at first sight.

Set comes with original late Biedermeier type side-away sliding chess box same period as set (please see image).
The patinated pine made box stained a dark nut brown in excellent condition with signs of age, wear and use.
