Description: Philippine Bontoc & Ifugao Tribals Wooden Chess Set. Rare and beautifully carved dark and light Ebony wood aka ironwood. The Bontoc tribe live in the mountains and were feared as head-hunters. The Ifagao believe in rice god and other deities. The set was carved by Josef Blas around 1972. On the light side K=Josef himself; Q=his wife, Mina carries a bundle of rice; B=priest holding rice wine; K=Deer; R=House on stilts with a bird on its roof; P=headhunters holding ax and enemy head, dark. K=Joseph; Q=Mina carrying a baby; B=Priest, K=Water buffalo; R=House with monkey on roof; P=Hunters seeking revenge. Reference Cultures, Chess & Art by Ned Munger. 2024. For Sale.
